North American Hunting Club's Deer Camp

The following story was written by a father of his version of what happened the morning of Dec. 31, 2009 when his son Sprout shot at 3 and killed 2 deer. What excitement this must have been!!
Like most mornings, this one started out good. Almost everyone was up for breakfast, answering roll call and making the plan of the hunt. We decided to cast the dogs in two locations, Wimpy headed out for Cemetery Trail and me and Babydoll was casting our three dog pack on Big Oak Road. The chase crew was fueled up and waiting to pursue the hounds with the hopes of getting far enough ahead of the pack in the hopes that they might get to identify the gender of the deer, but mostly to catch the dogs. The standers were all in their favorite tree stand with their radio's on and guns ready.
"The dogs are on the ground" echoed over the radio's and all was on full alert. As the two packs of dogs began to trail with a little bark every few yards, all was quiet over those little radios. And then it happened, in the distance I heard Wimpy's pack of dogs trail one up and the race was on. "Which way are they heading?" comes over the airways for all to hear. "They Split" comes back, "two are burning one up heading across Spring Run for Bertha and the other is going north to Torture Trail". Rainman comes back over the mic "I'm at Torture Trail and I hear him good." Tugboat keys up and adds "I'm at Bertha and the dogs sound like they're at the end of Dork". Meanwhile, the puppies that me and Babydoll turned out just stepped on one and the second pack race is on and it's right on top of us. Radios - OFF, I stand and listen to the three walker hounds charging, I can only describe the noise was like their tails were on fire and their heads were catching, it was great!
As usual, the one eared deaf guy was looking in the wrong direction when the first race jumped the trail I was on and into the thicket - gone. ON comes the radio just in time to hear Speedboat announce "three dogs in pursuit of three DOE'S and they're heading for the blue rock". Sprout keys in saying "I'm at the blue rock" and Rainman keys in "I'm on my way to help you Sprout", I key in and offer a word of encouragement "catchem up guys and we will recast again". The radio is getting real busy from the pursuit crews trying to get in front of the two races and more are joining in as they leave their favorite tree stand. These dogs loves the chase even if they are running girls and don't like to take a pit stop. As I'm getting back to the truck, listening to the radio and comparing what just happened with Babydoll, Rainman keys up "three DOE'S just crossed at Gibson's Corner". All of sudden, BLAMBLAMBLAM, "what was that?" I asked Babydoll, she's used to me asking these type of question. "I don't know" she replies. "Kinda sounded like a truck and trailer hauling butt down the road" I stated, and again she shrugged her shoulders with a could be look on her face. Then, over the airwave's come a squalling wailing sound I immediately recognize, followed by "TWO OUT OF THREE, I GOT TWO OUT OF THREE" and then some more yelling. When Sprout unkeyed the mic, the radio was silent and I was wondering where I went wrong???, Sprout is my son and a lifetime member of Baillie Camp, he knows that the taking of doe's during gun season is not allowed. I turn to Babydoll, asked "what did he just say?" "Two out of three" she answers back. The radio comes back to life again with squalling and yehaws from Sprout declaring one's a half rack eight point and the other one is the biggest and best eight point I've ever taken (or something like that). "What did he say Babydoll?" I asked. Just wanting to make sure I heard what I heard and she replies "he got two bucks", as the congratulations began to be announced over the radio from all the hunters in our camp and others.
We arrived at the scene of the crime to see a very happy man whose excitement and enjoyment of having a dream appear and come true in two seconds was almost overwhelming, you just would have had to been there.

This story ain't over yet.
Don't forget Wimpy's three dog pack is being pursued now by Tugboat, #2 and Wimpy. They are trying to cut them off and a doe was spotted by one of the other camps pursuit crew and they went from chasing deer to catching dogs. And they did a fine job of it! The road is filling with hunters stopping to look at the two bucks and congrats to the lucky Sprout when #2 shows up with handshakes and hugs from a proud uncle, and asked "where is the third one?" "The dogs are still running it the last I seen" he answers, #2 keys his radio and ask, "hey anyone hear them dogs?" Stubbs comes back "yes, I do, they are burning it up heading for the Bloody Mary Hole." #2 is back in the game telling all that he's heading for George's Road and Wimpy keys in "I'm on my way, I just caught the last dog from my pack, I'm heading down Patterson now." Peewee from Big Oak camp keys in with the news that #2 just shot a nice six pointer and they are going to Try Me Road to help him get it out. As Big Oak camp crew helps Baillie camp crew get the buck out of the woods, two dogs come out right behind them. Wimpy loads the hounds and joins the crew at Gibson's Corner for some celebration. What an ending for 2009 and for a very proud papa's side of the story.
