North American Hunting Club's Deer Camp

December 25,2006 our deer camp was started. Hunting in the south Gould city area, in the upper peninsula of michigan, we've done for years without a cabin. It was time to start a tradition. With me in my 40's and my boys 10 and 13 we had alot of work ahead. The site was decided, back in the pines. We put the posts in the ground and a deck on that. The materials were hauled in on a trailor behind the four wheeler. The cabin was built with rough sawn lumber, with the walls being 6-inch D logs. Door and windows were salvaged from remodel jobs. The roof left over pole barn metal. Tools included chainsaw, 3lb sledge hammer, caulking gun, post hole digger, hammer, tape and square. The walls were stacked log, glued then nailed with 10-inch spikes. It started out slow but eventually took shape. There was no definite plan it was a decide as you go process. The cabin sleeps six with the loft. A gas stove, a sink with water pumped up from a bucket, four gas lights, a tile shower with water pumped to it from a cooler with a bildge pump and a wood stove. A ceiling fan works off a battery, that gets charged when the generator runs. It was decided satalite TV was needed and with a little work we had the game on, or the hunting shows. The generator is a small honda that sits under the out house roof, can't even hear it.The cabin is very comfortable, woodstove gets it toasty warm. The building of the cabin is physically close to being done, the memories and the new traditions are just getting started. we hunt deer, bear, partridge, red squirrels and porkies. Dano was the first to shoot a deer at camp. We had a good turnout at camp, brothers, cousins and friends. We have alot of plans in the works for next year. Food plots, couple new blinds and cutting fire wood a whole lot of fire wood.
