As the hunting seasons here in Iowa begin coming to an end, I clean my guns, wax my bowstrings and put them away until next fall. I can't help but, get excited all over again for shed hunting!! Many hunters forget that their hunting season hasn't totally ended with the last day of the season. Around here mid February is when we start finding shed antlers, this is an enjoyable time of the year. This is the time of year you learn if that huge buck you missed during the rut last season, or the one that was to experienced, and didn't allow himself to get close enough, and you saw him 150 yds out. This is also how you can find his comfort zone, if you find his sheds you've learned at least two things about him: 1 he made it through the gun seasons, and 2 where he spends most of his time. Sometimes you learn not only is there a nice buck on your hunting land maybe just maybe there are two. I recomend all you serious hunters out there to head into the woods during your shedding season and bring your child, wife, girlfriend, or someone who isn't a hunter, I've seen it more than once, somtimes finding a nice shed is just enough to get that person interested in what we do, they might even become a great hunter! It's very healthy for us,a fun way to get some excercise, it helps get rid of the "cabin fever" and I have even found new places to put my stand. Who knows you just might walk into the perfect spot to turkey hunt that spring!
Remember while shed hunting look for places where deer have to jump over something may it be a log, fence, or creek. Also look for the bedding and feeding grounds, and don't forget to look up, they do get stuck in evergreen branches and shrubs. I hope to read about some nice shed hunts!
Happy hunting to all of you,and remember make shed hunting a family ordeal I'm sure you will have a blast!!
